Rink Foto – Three Golden Gate Gardens

Three Golden Gate Gardens
by Rink Foto

Rink Foto has photographed San Francisco since 1969. For AQ16’s theme of interiors, gardens, landscapes and music, he submitted photos of three gardens in Golden Gate Park. In the first photo below are views of the Academy of Sciences’ rooftop garden (background) and part of the garden in front of the Speckel’s Temple of Music. The second photo below is of the wooden entrance gate of the Japanese Tea Garden.

Dianne Kellogg – Gothic/Romantic Photographs

Gothic/Romantic Photographs

Dianne Kellogg is an Ohio native who married a “country boy.” She has spent the last forty-eight years in Ohio’s rural northeast snowbelt. Her photographic philosophy can be summarised as follows: “‘The best camera is the one you have with you,’ and now that the world is armed with smart phones, photography has exploded. I stop my car and pull over on a regular basis – what used to be the shot that got away is now recorded! I am always looking for great contrast, a leading line that moves the eye, balance or more exactly “off balance” and enough negative space to make it interesting.”

In response to AQ10’s call for pieces related to its theme of the earth, ecology and the future, Bob Ward submitted these two seaside photographs. The first photo also accompanies Pat Seman’s poem, Black Tree, which can be found in this issue’s poetry section.

Bob Ward studied science and then the history and philosophy of science. After a period spent in research he worked in education eventually becoming responsible for training teachers. Following retirement he served as a Quaker Prison Minister for several years. An active poet and photographer, he relishes the interplay between texts and visual images. His publications include Trusting at the Last, (Hawthorn Press, 2011). His website can be found at www.bobward.org.uk.

by Rink

Rink has photographed San Francisco’s LGBT community for over 44 years. His photos have been published in more than 40 books and appeared in more than a dozen films including Academy Award winners Milk, The Times of Harvey Milk and Common Threads in addition to The Castro, which won a Peabody Award.

Less well-known but just as important as his work with the LGBT community are Rink’s photographs of the landscapes and the other people that make San Francisco so distinctive.

Bryan Monte – Amsterdam 2013 LGBT Canal Parade

Photos from the 18th Annual LGBT Canal Parade, Amsterdam, August 2013
by Bryan Monte

Amsterdam and the Netherlands has had a reputation for toleration and cultural diversity for decennia. One “reflection” of this is the annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual boat parade that encircles the Grachtengordel (translation: canal belt) of Amsterdam with a route starting on the Prinsengracht, then over the Amstel River and ending at the Ij. The theme of this year’s parade was “Reflect.”

In addition to boats from LGBT businesses and organizations, the parade also featured floats from some Dutch political parties, the police and the armed forces. On board three of the boats were the Ministers of Defence, Finance and Education, Culture and Science. This year’s parade also included a float sponsored by the KNVB, the Dutch National Football (American English: Soccer) Association with players and coaches including former Dutch national team coach, Louis van Gaal and former Ajax (Amsterdam) footballer, Patrick Kluivert.
